Ghost and Haunting FAQs

Ghost and Haunting FAQs

Here are answers to frequently asked questions about ghosts, hauntings and life after death.

Question: Can animals be ghosts?
Answer: The answer seems to be yes in my mind. Animals, it seems, can be both ghosts and involved in hauntings. There are countless stories and cases from people who have heard, felt and even seen pets well after they have died. The animal usually behaves in ways that it did in life, carrying out its routines and habits - jumping on a bed, for example, to cuddle with its owner. The phenomenon brings up the question: do animals share the same life after death that humans do?
Question: Can ghosts attack?
"Have you ever heard of a ghost punching somebody?" asks a reader who wishes to remain anonymous. "That may have happened to me last night. I don't drink and I don't take drugs. This happened in my bedroom in the middle of the night. It wasn't a light tap, it was a powerful forearm strike, reminiscent of my days of studying martial arts. I truly don't understand it. If you know of others who have had this experience, it might help me comprehend what happened."
Answer: There are many cases in which people claim to have been physically assaulted by some unseen force, although in the great volume of ghost and haunting experiences, these instances are pretty rare. There are accounts of these forces pushing, pulling hair, slapping, poking, scratching and even biting. The true sources of these assaults and how they are physically manifested are unknown. Some possibilities are:
  • A ghost or spirit that is trying to get your attention.
  • Psychic phenomena -- a physical manifestation arising out of the subconscious, which many researchers believe accounts for poltergeist activity.
  • Those who believe in demons will blame them. (I don't.)
Which is responsible in your case? It's difficult to tell, especially since you haven't disclosed whether or not you have experienced other poltergeist or haunting activity in your home.
There is another possibility in your case, which has to do with your martial arts experience you mentioned. It's possible that as you lay asleep in bed that you experienced a strong muscle spasm (or some other explainable physical pain), and in your sleeping state you had the body memory of a forearm strike, which you knew from your martial arts days. Your unconscious mind put the pain and the memory together, and since there was no one there to actually deliver such a blow, it seemed as if a spirit was responsible.

Question: Do you believe that good ghosts exist?
"Everything I read seems to be about bad ghosts," says Betty. "I have only had good or sometimes strange experiences, but not scary. Every once in while I will see apparitions or something move out of the corner of my eye. Some nights I wake up with a lot of light moving around me just zipping back and forth. One night it was very, very busy and I thought what is going on. Sometimes it seems to play peek-a-boo with me in the hallway. Once I thought I saw a form of a person in the hall with what appeared to be a cloak either black or blue with white circles on it."
Answer: Most ghost and haunting activity is completely harmless. So I guess you could say they are good as opposed to bad or evil. The reason you read or see on TV stories about "bad" ghosts is because those are the stories that get the most attention. People want to see the scary stuff, and publishers and TV producers know that. The truth is that harmful or "evil" spirit activity is very rare. Most haunting activity consists of unexplained noises, scents, sensations, fleeting shadows... sometimes things get moved and voices are heard... and rarely an apparition is seen. And they're harmless, although they may frighten people because they don't expect them or understand them. So in the vast majority of haunting cases, there really isn't anything to be afraid of. Our own fear and lack of understanding is the problem.
